3D Murals
Space requirement - large room with tables.
Length - 8 to 20 days depending on the project.
Suitable for ages 5 to adults.
3D Mural Summary
The 3D Mural Workshop is a collaboratively made installation. Main activity involves the construction of paper mâché sculptures, using newspaper, paper-mache, masking tape, cardboard, and paint. The project is an engaging experience with beautiful results.
Participants work in groups of 2-10 and create the many pieces, which make up the mural. The sculptures are brought together and mounted on a wire structure as a permanent installation or on a portable structure. The creative process accommodates a wide range of participants of all ages, abilities, and characteristics.
Themes can reflect personal, community and global connectedness, celebrate diversity, environmental or cultural themes and concepts of collective imaginative inspiration. The theme is established in collaboration with the school or community members.
Why work in a 3D Mural
The process of creating a mosaic installation fosters awareness of our interdependence, collaborative and communication skills. Depending on the theme the sculptures of the installation can be rearranged with pieces added and changed over time. This creates a sustainable source of inspiration and literacy, culture and environmental development.
As well as beautifying the 3D mural display area, the project visually demonstrates the importance or power or value of the individual contribution to the whole, both for participants and for all who will view the mosaic.
Alphabet Frieze Summary
A simpler 3D Mural, alphabets are a collectively created art installation that makes for a vibrant display in libraries, hallways, and community rooms.
The project requires 6 to 10 days to complete and is suitable for multi-class or group participation ages 8 and up, accommodating a wide range of participants abilities and characteristics.
The main activity involves the construction of the letters, using mostly recyclable materials of newspaper, paper-mâché, masking tape, cardboard, and paint. Participants work in groups of 2-3 per letter, decorating the sculptures with funky playful designs.
Larger letters can be used for a permanent installation in classrooms, hallways, or libraries. Smaller designed letters can be used as an interactive and hands-on literacy tool, where words from a story can come to life, as even though letters range in height from 1 to 3 feet they are light enough for children to handle.
The process of creating the letters develops awareness of our interdependence, collaboration, problem-solving, and teamwork. Participants will learn about design, composition, structure, dimension and perspective and techniques of painting on three-dimensional objects.
Mosaics Summary
Mosaics projects require 4 to 10 days to complete (depending on participants age) and are suitable for multi-class or group participation ages 5 and above (including adults).
Installations are collaboratively made and result in a beautiful dynamic display.
Themes can reflect personal, community and global connectedness, celebrate diversity, environmental or cultural themes and concepts of collective imaginative inspiration. The theme is established in collaboration with the school or community members.
The main activities are painting cardboard, cutting the mosaic tile shapes, and laying the tiles to reflect the design. Materials are mostly recycled and the process is accessible to many ages and skill levels.
In the process of creating the mosaic participants will learn about colour mixing basics, painting techniques, numeracy, patterns, shapes, structure, form. I have observed that students who are high energy kinaesthetic learners are focused and enjoy this medium of art making.
