PROJECT: Run with the Caribou 1
Pamela Schuller, Marie Gaudet (First Nations Culture teacher) and Earthroots used learning through the arts to develop environmental, cultural and spiritual awareness. The project involved the creation of caribou masks with youth aged 11 to 24 in 2008.
Mask Workshops were conducted at the Native Child and Family Center, the First Nations School of Toronto, and Central Technical School. During the workshops, education about the plight of the Woodland Caribou in the Ogoki forest was presented by Earthroot representatives.
A public presentation at Withrow Park of the Caribou masks was called "Run with the Caribou" led by Marie Gaudet. Public participation involved a walk through the medicine wheel laid out in the park where the public learned about the four directions related to the caribou. A circle dance and an Earthroots presentation were also conducted.
The masks were exhibited at Metro Hall and at the Native Canadian Centre.
